If You Want to Grow Your Service-Based Business Don’t Make This Huge Mistake

Episode 605: Show Notes

The opinions we share in this conversation might make you uncomfortable, and that’s okay! Today’s show addresses one of the patterns we’ve seen emerge among our clients: their goals are amazing, but the path they intend to take to get there keeps them playing small. This week we dive into the top scaling mistakes we see businesses make.

Getting distracted with new ideas is a common mistake we see as a business owner’s success accelerates. It is easy for them to neglect the health of their core mission and chase shiny objects.

We’ll brainstorm with you, regardless of how you intend to move forward, but we do have some hard-earned insights that suggest that staying focused on the skillset you have and knowing your value can lead you to a place where growth becomes potential. You CAN find the time and money freedom you’ve been dreaming of; it’s never too late to get back to your zone of genius, or to change, transition, and pivot to work on what you should be working on!

We’re here to give you the tough-love talk you may need as a one-to-many model business owner. It’s so important to continually ask yourself, “What is it that you want out of what you’re doing?” Once you’ve done that, you need to do the math!

We can’t tell you what to believe, but your audit of what you’re already doing certainly can. We’ve made mistakes along the way, and we want to help you avoid the same ones we made, which is totally possible. You can carve out a way forward that leads to your growth rather than inhibiting it, with the right strategy for scaling up! Here’s how.

The hard truth for struggling one-to-many model business owners to hear

Many people struggle with this particular hurdle, and the problems it creates are far from small! Most of our clients are prepared to dream big. That’s one of the reasons we’re so disappointed when we hear how they plan to achieve their goals.

Time and again we’ve spoken with prospective clients looking to leave their jobs and start or grow a business, and almost all of them have very similar things in common:

  • They are frustrated with their jobs.

  • They have a vision of what they want their new business to look like.

  • They want freedom in how they spend their time.

  • They want to be able to work from anywhere.

  • They want to have a small but mighty team.

  • They don’t want to sacrifice the income from their current job.

It’s all too common that folks want to start with ridiculously low price points. And the result? Working far too hard for way too little money, getting stuck in a job you hate, and getting totally burnt out. If more people continued to work at the business they actually started, with the skillset they’re highly trained in, and they didn’t stray so far from where they began, then they would reach their goals so much faster!

Tough-love talk all struggling one-to-many model business owners need to hear

We made this mistake! Our first membership was a $17 a month membership. We ended up creating enough content for $200 a month. Needless to say, this wasn’t viable! We want to help you to avoid the same mistakes, which is why we’re dishing out some tough love! Firstly, there’s no better way to map out how to get to where you want to be than simply doing the math. You don’t have to believe us, but you can believe the numbers. Secondly, don’t discount your own skill level and the amount of work you do on a daily basis. We have all been convinced that the only way to reach time and money freedom is to leave services and have a one-to-many model. That’s just not true! If you stay focused on the skillset you already have, you don’t have to do that!

How to actually achieve the goals you say you want to achieve (not just financially!)

Why are we only starting to talk about the seven-figure business owner now? Sometimes having a higher price point means having a higher level of investment from your clients. Once you’ve identified what it is that you want, it’s time to look at the root of what you actually offer to get you there. When you truly decide to serve less people, then growth becomes potential for you! It’s not the vehicle that’s the thing. It’s what you’ve learned because of it. There is no version of ‘it’s too late’ to make that happen! When you feel this wave of simplification, of a clear intention coming to you, it is such a relief! Feelings of scarcity inhibit growth. A mindset of abundance changes everything, and we’re here to help you get back to that zone of genius.
